How a job runs, from first message to handover

  • Design and buildWe draw up straightforward projects ourselves. On complex ones we work in partnership with your architect and engineer, or bring in ones we trust.
  • New timber-frame buildingsFoundations, frame, insulation, roof and cladding, with the interior fitted out by the same team.
  • Whole-house renovationFloors and structure repaired, rooms replanned, kitchens and bathrooms rebuilt.
  • Listed and period buildingsWe have worked on listed buildings. Changes that affect a listed building's character need consent before work starts, and we plan for that with you from the first visit.
  • Kitchens and cabinetryMade in birch plywood in our own workshop, to fit the room.
  • Consents set out at the startWe tell you at the site visit what needs planning permission, Building Regulations approval or an engineer, and the quote says who deals with each.
Full buildThe Treehouse, near Fowey

A timber-frame cabin built from a bare wooded slope, foundations to furniture.

This one is ours, designed and built by Thoughtful from start to finish. The plot is a steep wooded bank, so the first job was holding it back: tiered gabion walls, drainage and a sewage treatment plant, all in before any timber arrived.

The cabin stands on concrete pier foundations, with a timber frame, insulated walls and roof, a metal roof and timber cladding. Folding glazed doors open the living space onto a deck among the trees. The interior is finished; the deck and exterior are being completed now.

Inside, everything was made for the building: a birch plywood kitchen and cabinetry from our own workshop, a sleeping loft and ladder, a wood burner on a stone hearth, and a bathroom with a sunken microcement bath.
